Wakeboarding: A Beginner’s Guide

Are you an adventurous, sporty kind of traveller? Making your way to Mnarani Club Hotel and wandering about what there is to do to aid your energetic holiday escapades?

We have you sorted! Mnarani Club Hotel has partnered with 3 Degrees South Kenya to give you that adventurous holiday experience. One of our most favoured sporting activities is Wakeboarding. Never tried it before?

Here are a few tips and tricks on how to get started:

  1. Fall, fall and fall again

You will fall! Be prepared to take a few face plants and shoulder plunges into the water but don’t be discouraged.

  1. Upper body strength is vital

Wakeboarding will be tough on your arms. They will feel shaky and start to hurt but just keep trying and you will gain strength.

  1. Getting up

Wakeboarding is all about getting on your feet. The best way to do that is to remain calm and relaxed, keep your arms stretched out without bending your elbows with a firm grip on the handle and your knees bent. Once the boat starts to move and the cable/rope starts to pull, keep your arms stretched out and start rising a little with your legs.

  1. Use a shorter rope at first

Using a shorter rope will make it easier for beginners to stand up. Shorter ropes allow the wakeboarder to remain within the narrow section of a wake where longer ropes give more advanced wakeboarders increased speeds and more air time.

  1. No pulling on the rope

Wakeboarding is about letting the boat pull you up and not having to do the work yourself. Trying to pull yourself up will only make the board nose dive into the water and you will have to start all over again.

  1. Once you’re up – it’s all about stance

Maintaining the right stance starts by figuring out whether you are regular or goofy footed. Regular footed boarders have their left foot forward, whereas goofy footed boarders have their right foot forward. Once you have figured this out, bring the handle of the rope to the side of your leading hip while looking straight ahead.

  1. Now that you are up – stay up!

You are bound to fall a few times before perfecting this sport but you are bound to be up and boarding in no time if you take note of and follow the steps listed above.

Book your stay at Mnarani Club Hotel and test your skills on the waters of the Kilifi Creek. Please note: the Water Sports Centre is seasonal and will be closed during the month of June 2019.
